Qualitative models on stream ecosystem recovery: exploratory studies

چکیده
Most of water ecosystems are endangered by human actions, in spite of their importance for all living systems. Qualitative models and simulations may be useful for stream ecosystem recovery in many ways: for understanding such systems, to predict values of variables and to combine such understanding with restoration and proactive actions of management. This study describes the development of qualitative simulation models about the effects of pollution by organic matter and its consequences on the amount of dissolved oxygen and mortality of fishes. We present simulations of good and bad management practices, that may result in increasing and reducing fish stocks. Problems we found and solutions we implemented during the modelling effort are discussed, including the explicit representation of assumptions and the role of ambiguities in the outcomes of the models. We argue that new ontologies and qualitative domain theories will be required in order to tackle processes are related to both energy flow and nutrient cycling and to represent complex interactions between physical, chemical and biological phenomena.

Development of a Qualitative Model for Investigating Benthic Community Response to Anthropogenic Activities
The quality of stream ecosystems in many areas of the world is significantly degraded as a result of conversion of natural landscapes to urban and agricultural uses. Impacts of these activities can be observed in the organization of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities, which have distinct responses to physical, chemical, and biological disturbances. However, the information relating anthr...
متن کاملHabitat Simulation Technique as a Powerful Tool for Instream Flow Needs Assessment and River Ecosystem Management
Instream flow needs (IFN) assessment studies are performed to provide guidelines for stream water management and to assess the impacts of different water projects such as weirs, dams and stream diversions on the available fish habitat. The physical habitat simulation is one of the IFN assessment methods and also a powerful tool in management of river ecosystem that has not become a common metho...

The study area is located in the south of Qushadagh mountain range, in the north of Asbkhan village, Heris township. In terms of structural geology of Iran, this area is located in the main zone of Central Iran and Alborz-Azerbaijan sub-zone. The geological units of the region are including Eocene igneous and pyroclastic rocks with combination of andesitic, trachyandesitic, basaltic, tuffic and...
متن کاملMid- and Long-Term Effects of Wildfire and Debris Flows on Stream Ecosystem Metabolism
Wildfire is an important and prevalent agent of disturbance in vegetated landscapes across much of the Earth’s surface, including forested watersheds in the arid western USA. Between 1992 and 2003, >40% of the watersheds in the upper reaches of the Boise River watershed in central Idaho burned. The purpose of our study was to investigate the legacy effects of wildfire on stream ecosystems by an...
متن کاملConsumer return chronology alters recovery trajectory of stream ecosystem structure and function following drought.
Consumers are increasingly being recognized as important drivers of ecological succession, yet it is still hard to predict the nature and direction of consumer effects in nonequilibrium environments. We used stream consumer exclosures and large outdoor mesocosms to study the impact of macroconsumers (i.e., fish and crayfish) on recovery of intermittent prairie streams after drying. In the strea...
